SMARTA 2 – Demonstrators, Promoting Sustainable Shared Mobility Interconnected with Transport in European Rural Areas

SMARTA 2 is a mobility project that designs, implements and evaluates shared mobility solutions interconnected with public transport in rural areas, continuing the legacy of its sister project, SMARTA.

SMARTA 2 features four European rural areas that are diverse in terms of demographics, landscape and location: East Tyrol (Austria), Trikala (Greece), Águeda (Portugal) and Brasov (Romania). These areas offer an ideal testbed for shared mobility solutions and can serve as inspiration for mobility practitioners across Europe.

In East Tyrol (Austria), SMARTA 2 supports the expansion of a local e-carsharing system, Flugs. SMARTA 2 powers Flugs with four new e-carsharing stations and e-cars, so that citizens in rural areas can connect with the central hub of Lienz. In Trikala (Greece), SMARTA 2 powers a mobile-app offering multiple options such as carpooling, real-time bus information and booking services that can help the area’s local community to travel to the city centre in a cheaper and more environmentally friendly way. In turn, in Águeda (Portugal), with its longstanding tradition in bike-manufacturing (also known as a two-wheel city) the project expands the existing e-bike network, beÁgueda, with 15 brand-new e-bikes and 10 stations, connecting rural areas to the municipality. Finally, the project helps Brasov (Romania) setup a carpooling service interconnected with the local public transport system, through a bottom-up, participatory approach.

SMARTA 2 will monitor all of the above services using a robust evaluation framework and develop a set of practical recommendations for practitioners and stakeholders interested in the field of rural mobility and transport.
